ASTRO CHICKENS Review & Gameplay Guide
I just spent the last few hours playing Astro Chickens and I'm still trying to process what I just experienced. I mean, the game's title should've been a dead giveaway - it's literally about chickens in space, but I didn't think it would be this crazy. The gameplay's pretty straightforward, you control a chicken that's floating around in zero gravity, and you have to collect these gems while avoiding obstacles like asteroids and enemy spaceships. Sounds simple, but trust me, it's a lot harder than it sounds.
The controls are actually really tight, which is a huge plus in my book. I was worried that the zero gravity thing would make the game feel all slippery and hard to control, but the devs did a great job of making it feel really responsive. You can boost around, dodge and weave through obstacles, and even do these crazy chicken-style flips that are just plain fun. And the graphics, oh man - the game looks amazing. The colors are all bright and vibrant, and the chickens are just so... fluffy. I mean, I know that sounds weird, but it's true - the chickens in this game are adorable.
But here's the thing - the game gets really, really hard. Like, frustratingly hard. I'm talking throw-your-controller-hard. The levels start off pretty easy, but as you progress, the obstacles get more and more intense. You'll be dodging laser beams, avoiding giant rolling balls of death, and trying to navigate through these tiny little tunnels. And if you die, which you will, a lot, you have to start over from the beginning of the level. It's not a huge deal, but it can get pretty annoying. I found myself yelling at the screen more than once, which is always a sign that a game's got its hooks in me.
Despite the frustration, I have to admit that I'm really enjoying Astro Chickens. It's just so... weird. And I mean that in the best possible way. The game's got this amazing sense of humor, and the chickens all have these hilarious little personalities. There's even this one chicken that's just a giant, flaming chicken head that breathes fire - it's amazing. The game's also got a great soundtrack, all this funky electronic music that just gets you pumped up and ready to take on the next level.
One thing that I do wish the game had, though, is a bit more variety in the levels. I mean, the game's got a ton of different levels, but they all start to feel a bit same-y after a while. You're always just collecting gems and avoiding obstacles, which can get a bit repetitive. I think it would've been cool if they'd added some more varied objectives, like maybe a level where you have to rescue other chickens from an alien spaceship, or something like that. But overall, I'm really happy with the game, and I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who's looking for something a bit off the beaten path.
All in all, Astro Chickens is a game that's all about excess - it's over-the-top, crazy, and just plain fun. It's not for everyone, I know that - some people are going to find it too hard, or too weird, or just too much. But for me, it's a game that's all about embracing the absurdity and just going with it. So if you're feeling adventurous, and you're up for a challenge, I'd say give Astro Chickens a shot. Just be prepared to yell at the screen a lot - trust me, it's worth it.
