Tanks 1944 Review & Gameplay Guide
I just spent the last few hours playing Tanks 1944 and I've got to say, it's been a bit of a mixed bag for me. On the one hand, I love the idea of a World War II tank game - there's something about the strategy and tactics involved in commanding a tank that really appeals to me. And at first, I was pretty excited to dive in and start playing. The graphics are pretty decent, especially considering the game's age, and the sound effects are really immersive. The rumble of the tank's engine, the boom of the cannon, it all feels pretty realistic.
But as I started playing, I began to notice some pretty big issues. For one thing, the controls can be really clunky at times. It's not always easy to get your tank to do what you want it to do, and I found myself getting frustrated more than once when my tank would get stuck on a rock or something. And the AI is pretty weak, too - I've had enemies just sit there and let me shoot them, which doesn't exactly make for a challenging or realistic experience. I mean, I know I'm not the best gamer in the world, but I shouldn't be able to just roll over the enemy like that.
Despite all that, though, I did have some pretty fun moments playing Tanks 1944. There's a mission where you have to defend a hill against a bunch of enemy tanks, and it's actually really intense. You have to use cover, flank the enemy, and make use of your tank's strengths to take them out. It's moments like those that make me think this game could have been really great with a bit more development. The problem is, those moments are few and far between, and most of the time you're just driving around, shooting at stuff, and not really feeling like you're accomplishing much.
I also have to say that the game's lack of multiplayer is a pretty big deal for me. I mean, what's the point of a tank game if you can't play with your friends? It's just not as much fun playing against the AI all the time, and I think the game would be a lot more enjoyable if you could team up with some buddies and take on the enemy together. As it is, the game just feels kind of... lonely, I guess. You're just out there on your own, fighting against the computer, and it's not very satisfying.
One thing I will say is that the game's historical accuracy is actually pretty impressive. The tanks all look and sound like their real-life counterparts, and the missions are all based on real battles from World War II. So if you're a history buff, you might get a kick out of that. But for me, it's not enough to make up for the game's other shortcomings. I mean, I want a game that's fun to play, not just one that's historically accurate. And unfortunately, Tanks 1944 just doesn't deliver in that regard.
Overall, I'd say that Tanks 1944 is an okay game, but it's not really worth playing unless you're a huge fan of tank games or World War II history. Even then, you might find yourself getting frustrated with the clunky controls and weak AI. It's not a bad game, per se, but it's just not a very good one either. With a bit more development and some multiplayer action, it could have been really great, but as it is, it's just kind of... meh.
