Voxelrift Review & Gameplay Guide
I just spent the last 20 hours playing Voxelrift, and I'm still trying to process my thoughts on the game. I went into it with pretty high expectations, I mean who doesn't love a good voxel-based sandbox game, right? The graphics are definitely one of the strong suits of the game - the voxel art style is really cute and the world is full of charm. The colors are bright and vibrant, and the blocky terrain has a certain appeal to it that's hard to deny. But, as we all know, graphics aren't everything.
The gameplay is where things start to get a little mixed for me. On the one hand, I love the sense of freedom that Voxelrift gives you - you can build and explore to your heart's content, and the game doesn't really try to steer you in any particular direction. The building mechanics are also pretty solid, and I had a lot of fun constructing my own little base and decorating it with all sorts of goodies. But on the other hand, the combat and survival mechanics feel a bit lacking. The enemies are pretty generic and don't really pose much of a threat, and the hunger and health systems are way too forgiving. I found myself ignoring them for the most part and just focusing on building and exploring.
One of the things that really disappointed me about Voxelrift is the lack of a real storyline or narrative. I know some people don't care about that sort of thing, but I think it's really important for a game to have a compelling story to draw you in and keep you invested. Voxelrift's story is basically non-existent - you just spawn in the world and are left to your own devices, with no real goals or objectives to work towards. I know the game is still in early access, so maybe this is something that will be addressed in future updates, but for now it's definitely a weakness.
Despite my criticisms, I still had a really good time playing Voxelrift. The game has a certain relaxing quality to it that's hard to find in other sandbox games. I loved just building and exploring, and the game's chill atmosphere made it easy to get lost in for hours on end. I also appreciate that the game doesn't try to be too complex or overwhelming - it's a very accessible game that's easy to pick up and play, even for people who aren't super experienced with sandbox games. If you're a fan of games like Minecraft or Terraria, you'll probably find a lot to like in Voxelrift.
I do wish the game had a bit more polish, though. There are some pretty annoying bugs and glitches that can be frustrating to deal with, and the game's performance can be a bit spotty at times. I experienced some lag and frame rate issues, especially when I was building or exploring in areas with a lot of complex terrain. Hopefully these issues will be addressed in future updates, because they can really take away from the overall experience.
Overall, I'd say Voxelrift is a solid but not spectacular game. It's definitely worth checking out if you're a fan of sandbox games, but it's not going to blow you away or anything. With a bit more development and polish, I think Voxelrift could really become something special - but for now, it's just a fun little game that's worth playing if you're in the mood for something relaxing and creative.
